Steel Trees at Istanbul Airport

In this project, the statical analysis and engineering calculations for the steel trees, designed as a unique free-form lighting to be located in the Terminal Buildings 1 to 4, of the newly commisioned İstanbul Airport, have been completed.

The calculations were done as per Turkish and American codes  (AISC, ASCE).

Typically, the steel trees were 6.4 meters high and 9.6 meters in diameter. Please see the accompanying photos and design renders. The load bearing system consisted of moment resisting frames and the lateral resistance were provided by the framing made up with brace elements. The gravitational loads were also transmitted through braces to the foundation.

The design sections and material classes have been selected as follows:

Profiles : H120x120x8mm S355JR

Connection plates and Column base plates: S355JR

Anchorage bolts: M20 (10.9)

Steel profile butt-weld connections were all designed as full-penetration
